Looking into tomorrow…
Sam received a set of toy binoculars yesterday and spent the rest of the day looking at everything through them. This morning we were driving to school and he asked, “Dad, how do my binoculars work?”
I began to explain about the curved glass that magnifies the image…and he interrupted me, “No, I just want to know how they work…how do the trees get closer to me before I move?”
“Huh?” I replied.
“How do those trees move closer before I get there?” he asked seriously.
“Um, well, um,” I stammered.
And before I could think up an actual reply that would make sense to him he said, “Maybe I can look into tomorrow.”
I need to find a pair of those future telling binoculars…but until then, here is some stuff that I am excited about over the next fews weeks:
- We are continuing our series called Old News is Good News. I am loving this journey through the Old Testament as we look back at a few of the stories that help us better understand the Good News of Christmas.
- December 20th is going to be an amazingly cool day at nbc…you will just have to be there to experience it. We are going to celebrate like never before. It is a combination of an open house, a party, drama, caroling, opening presents, and experiencing giving from God’s perspective. Here is a hint: ever been excited for someone to open a gift you bought for them? Ever wonder how God felt on that first Christmas?
- AND the nbc staff is putting together a Christmas gift for everyone that you won’t want to miss…promise…I would tell you…but it is top secret.
- I am really looking forward to visiting Ashley’s family over Christmas. There is something about the mountains and snow that reconnects me into God’s creation story.
- More Bengal wins…this could be the year.
- And BTW how did KU basketball sneak up on us so fast…it’s here. And I am looking for a ticket…
- I am going deer hunting with my Mom. Wow, this is going to be fun. Seriously.
- This Sunday is going to include a invitation to covenant with God and his redemption work. I am praying that this Sunday at nbc shapes us for the next 10 years. Pray with me.

Too bad that the older you get it makes it harder to focus on the important things with the same wonder as a young child it seems until the very end of your life! Hope I get a new pair of glasses this Christmas!
Thank you Shane for sharing with us about Sam. After last Sunday morning I even see him different. Not as “the pastor’s kid” but as God’s kid!
