Questions I Am Asking

February 3, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

As a new and learning leader I am experiencing many things as I fly by the seat of my pants (I don’t even know what that means…but it sounds about right). One of the ways I try to overcome the learning curve is by being willing to lead with questions. When I lead with questions I open the doors for investment in the vision. Questions initiate and invite a response. Here are some of the questions I am asking right now:

  • What do I, as a pastor, consider success?
  • How do we move the church from being an event, to a movement of people living out the ways of Jesus?
  • Can assimilation of new people be a relational process rather than a programmed process?
  • What are the differences in expectation between the ‘churched’ and the ‘unchurched’?
  • How do we communicate? How can we do it better?
  • How can we engage people more in worship? How do we become ‘one’ in praise?
  • Can we be about the whole family rather than segmenting them into ministries?
  • What are we doing wrong? What are we doing right? What do we need to do better?
  • Are our systems for leadership, communication, involvement, etc. clear and communicated?
  • Is our vision clear? Is our desire and energy hot?
  • Do guests feel wanted? Do they know where and what to do? Is our ‘ask’ clear?
  • Are we changing people or entertaining them?

What questions are you asking in your life, business, or church?

Great questions, I’m relatively new to New Beginnings but i heard Pastor Shane mention this website after a sermon. I like the idea of updated web discussions that connect one Sunday to the next. I think your church should continue doing this.

As a guest I feel somewhat ‘wanted’. I’m not sure where to go in the lobby when I’m there, and I’m interested in what the church people do during the week. Are there ways to find this out?

I think more communication could be better if I knew who was on your staff. As a newcomer, if I learn who the pastors are at church based on the service, I’m more willing to find them and tell them I’m new. When I’ve gone to your church, the only people I’ve seen talk up front were the music leader and Pastor Shane, and I didn’t see them after the service. I’d say that’s my big answer for your question on communication.

Thanks, keep up the good work.

Jeff, good thoughts and thanks for the feedback…it is very valuable to me. We are working hard on getting a place (our church website) to create the other 6-days in the week conversation we begin on Sunday mornings…hopefully within the next few weeks we will have it available.
